The sight of David Shrigley tearing up pieces he created then deemed deficient, not right, off —tossing those pieces into a discard pile —was at first horrific. “No!” I wanted to scream. But on second, third…etc. thought, it became aspirational for me. As a writer, every word, every story is not a keeper—cannot be. Knowing what is and what isn’t is liberating and something I will strive for more and more. It helps if I keep Rusty, my darling terrier mix, nearby. He is not one to hold on to bad toys. Some must go.
That quote toward the end! "Art can be anything, be made by anybody, be appreciated by anybody..." His work definitely stays true to that tenet, which is much of its joy. Glad to learn more about him. And you. Since I'm spand branky new here, I just read your Welcome Message and zowie! You've had quite the adventurous career. Still do. Which is why I'm three-thumbs upping your decision to go monthly. Phew! No, I don't have three thumbs. I borrowed one temporarily. 😊 Nice to meet you.
Nice article. My husband has an antiques and art auction and we have sold many of Shrigley’s works. They are always clever and charming. It’s nice to see more interest in them.
I’m in awe of your ability to put out such consistently wonderful work! In full support of transitioning to monthly, a “really good” idea 👍😉
I adore your Substack, and absolutely support your decision to go monthly. Thanks for putting in all the hours of research. It shows.

Too many great images to say which is best!
So great! 🐶
I like the dog with the “fuck” dog tag. So understated but effective.
