How to boil this down to all the thoughts that come into my mind about art and artists is like an infinity mirror in my mind. Thank you for sharing this and I'll take a dog sculpture, too. Anyone?

Love this. Such a thoughtful telling, reclaiming, and reframing of her life and work. Have you seen Kusama: Infinity?

My favorite piece at one of my top

8 artists- more like my top 5 that go up & down on that scale! What an amazing woman! Coming to America was a HUGE thing back then. As a woman alone back then it was an even bigger deal.

WHAT A WOMAN!!

I have long been a fan of Yayoi’s work after first experiencing her Fireflies Infinity Mirror Room at the Phoenix Art Museum when visiting from the east coast back in 2010. It was before Instagram even existed (barely) and I got to experience it as she intended. That single piece was the first domino for my growing fascination with her and her art. The more I learned about her life and the fearlessness of her art, the more obsessed I became. Her work is both alienating and accessible….and endlessly fascinating to me.

I was able to go back to see that same mirror room in 2021 and, unsurprisingly, it was full of teenagers that had camped inside to take photos (loudly). Alas, her critics are unknowingly critiquing modern society more than they are critiquing her art. When experienced as intended, it is a meditative experience that transports you to another world and reminds you of how small we really are in this huge universe. My only critique today is the ridiculously short period of time museums allow you to spend in her other mirror rooms. I understand the volume of people they want to flow through daily, but it’s close to impossible to fully appreciate the art in the span of a single minute. That time limitation is part of what is transforming her work into Instagram experiences. Go in. Snap your photos. Get out. Next person.

From lifelong, never-ending struggle, she made joy. I feel lucky to have visited a few of her infinity rooms, each joyful in its own way. I didn’t know about the dogs. Thank you for this look at an extraordinary woman and career.
